Borrowing Basics

The Catskill Public Library and Palenville Branch Library are dedicated to providing free access to the world of ideas, learning and entertainment for enrichment of their respective communities. Our mission is to continually improve and expand our services, materials and programs to best serve the needs and desires of the residents of Catskill and Palenville, to whom the library belongs.

Read below to see what materials are available to you through your libraries!

If something isn’t in our catalog, we may still be able to get it for you from another library! Call the library or come in, and we can check and put in a request for you.

The Catskill Public Library and Palenville Branch Library offer print and audiovisual materials for borrowing by Mid-Hudson Library System cardholders.

The regular collection includes:

  • Print: books, magazines, and graphic novels
  • Audiovisual materials: CDs, videogames and DVDs

Note: An item will not automatically renew if there is a hold on it.

Titles not available at the Catskill or Palenville Libraries can be requested from other libraries or requested for purchase.

Special collections such as newspapers, reference books, and our Local History collection cannot be removed from the Catskill or Palenville Library properties.

However, patrons are invited to use the special collections materials in-building, including taking photographs and making copies of needed pages.

The special collections include:

  • Newspapers: The Daily Mail, The Times Union, The Daily Freeman
  • Reference: encyclopedias, table-top roleplaying guides, dictionaries
  • Local History: large-format maps, census and index records, Catskill high school yearbooks, history of tourism along the Hudson River, and more

Some Local History titles can also be found in our regular collection for borrowing.

Our Reference Librarian is also able to help you with research.

A ‘Library of Things’ refers to any non-traditional circulating materials in a library’s collection. These non-traditional items may include toys, equipment, technology, instruments, and even clothing.

Palenville Branch Library: Toys, Instruments, Museum Passes, Hotspots

Currently, your libraries offer a variety of toys, sports equipment, and technology to take home. Borrowers must sign a ‘Borrower Agreement’, and minors must have a parent, caregiver, or guardian co-sign.

Many of the resources you will find online through our databases are viewable at any time for as long as you need!

Our eBook, eMagazine, and eAudiobook app, Libby, offers loans for 7 to 21 days with a chance for renewals. Within the Libby app is Libby Extras, which offers further content in music lessons, concerts, movies, and more!

hoopla, which offers eBooks, eMagazines, eAudiobooks, eMusic, and eTV shows, has month-long loans, with a limit to 5 items per account, per month.

Can’t find what you’re looking for on our shelves? The Catskill and Palenville libraries may be able to request your item from another library!

Mid-Hudson Library System (MHLS)

The MHLS is a network of 66 member libraries across Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Putnam, and Ulster counties. Cardholders within the MHLS may use their library cards to check out from, and return items to, any participating library. Cardholders may also request items to be delivered between participating libraries.

Some items may only be borrowed by cardholders of specific libraries.

SouthEastern Access to Libraries (SEAL)

Search for books, magazines, and other resources available in the academic, special, public, and school library community of southeastern New York – all from one search screen! If you identify the material you want to use, please see the staff of your local library.

  • An item listed in SEAL does not guarantee availability
  • All SEAL requests must be ordered through library staff
